Tamkang High School

Tamkang High School, formerly known as the Tamkang Middle School or Sun Tek Female Middle School (Tamsui Female High School). Tamkang High School was founded by Dr. George Leslie Mackay’s son, Dr. George William Mackay. At the end of the year 1911, (Dr. George Leslie Mackay had passed away) Dr. George William Mackay came back to Taiwan from Canada to make arrangements preparing for the establishment of Tamkang High School. On 9 March 1914, it was approved by the Japanese colonial government, and it was on the same date as to when Mackay first arrived in Tamsui. Because of this, March 9 9th become the school anniversary. In the same year, Oxford college was first established on April 4th, and the headmaster was also Dr. George William Mackay. The first class included 30 students. 1956, Oxford College merged with Sun Tek Female Middle School and became today’s Tamkang High School.

The school is a historical campus, its background and stories are abundant. Mackay memorial cemetery, gymnasium, octagonal tower, the great chapel, and so much more are all the buildings representing the historical aspects of this school.

Relatively, because Tamkang High School has a long history, the most well-known known as the 228 events all started with a group of Tamsui residents breaking into the campus and stealing the guns stored in the military training classroom to attack the army’s base. This caused the students and teachers to suffer, Principal Chen Nung Tung, Physics and Chemistry teacher Lu Yuan, PE teacher Huang A Tung, Chairman Lin Mao Sheng were all killed as a result. Today, there is a memorial monument on the famous red brick road on the campus, it is to remember the ancestors who protected our school.

Other than the buildings, the rugby team is also a distinguish feature. It was started by the then 29-year-old Chen Qing Chong. He was the brother of Chen Qing Yi, the son-in-law of Dr.Mackay. He graduated from the Oxford College, and was an excellent rugby player in Japan. Tamkang High School rugby team was the first in Taiwan, and we could still see the players training today in the field.

Tamkang High School has nurtured many outstanding alumni, ranging from singers, actors, movie directors, writers, politicians, entrepreneurs. The most well-known are the former president Lee Tung Hui, international pop singer Jay Chou, Famous writer Chong Chao Cheng, and native folk song singer Parangalan.
