【What reason lead Mackay to preach?】

The Mackay family, which was originally from the Scottish Highlands and later then triggered by the British Revolution, caused the Mackay family to flee to the village in Embro, Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada because there were heavily indebted.

In 1832, the first church was established in the village of Zora, and the church was stacked with 18 round head beams, so it was called "old log church" by later generations and demolished because it was too old. The only remaining photos remain a model of the former Embro, Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, and a painting of an old log church.

The first pastor of the old log church, Rev. Donald Mackenzie, was a priest whom The Scottish Ross Assembly announced came to Canada, and Donald Mackenzie became the first pastor in Zorra Village and elected eight elders on September 5, 1835, of which Mackay's father, George Mackay, was one of them.

After his retirement, Rev. Donald Mackenzie of Zorra Village believed that Christianity should be spread around the world, so he guided a total of 38 young people on the path of preaching, including Mackay, who went to Taiwan.

【Why did Mackay come to Taiwan?】

In September 1870, at the age of 26, Mackay applied to the Canadian Presbyterian Overseas Advocacy Association to volunteer as an overseas missionary teacher, but because Mackay was still too young to be trusted by the church, many said that Mackay was too impatient and needed some experience, so he was not immediately approved. But Mackay wasn’t lazy during waiting, in November, he went to the University of Edinburgh Seminary in England to study and refine himself, fortunately, in April of the following year, Mackay received a letter from the president of the Overseas Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, saying that his application had been approved and submitting his application to the General Assembly, and in mid-June, the Presbyterian Church of Canada held a meeting in Quebec and decided to send him to China for the mission.
