  Yang Qinghua was born poor, his father died when he was young. When he became an adult, he was very filial, lived with his mom and took care of her until her death. He also stayed at multiple cities in China when he worked as local authority, and therefore learned Beijing dialect, which helped his later work alongside Mackay. 19 April 1872, he became the first local people to listen to gospel, and later baptized to become the first follower in Norther Taiwan on April 24.

  Yang Qinghua was asked to do chores and little stuffs such as organize medicine by Mackay at first. He worked hard with no questioon asked, and eventually passed the test Mackay had given to him to make him the first student of Mackay. Mackay taught him Bible knowledges and Latin language, and because of Yang Qinghua’s brilliance, Mackay once praised him saying : “Very familiar with the gospel in a short amount of time” and High administration execution ability”

  On 17 May 1885, he became the first Taiwanese pastor.
