When William Gauld was young, Dr.George Leslie Mackay went back to Canada to report to the Presbyterian Church Committee. Because of this, he was inspired by him and decided to become a missionary. Upon graduated from Christian College and Theology seminary, he was also sent to Taiwan by Canada Presbyterian Church to further help the missionary work. On 23 July 1892, William Gauld and his wife Margaret Mellis arrived at Tamsui, which officially opened his new life chapter in Taiwan.
Without question, William Gauld was a brilliant young missionary. He organized the churches in Northern Taiwan and quickly solved many challenges. All these works made Dr.Mackay trusted him with the main missionary job, and became more important after his death.
William Gauld had professional architecture knowledge, where he used this to design many buildings in Taiwan. The most famous of all, is the Taipei Mackay Memorial Hospital. In addition, he also witnessed the weddings of Mackay’s daughters. With all being said, even though he was not blood-related to Mackay, he was still an important and impactful person in his life. Now, he is buried in the Mackay Cemetary, the only person who was not Mackay’s family in it.
