Tiu Chhang Min had a horrible childhood. She was given away to become other family’s child bride, but her fiancé died when she was still 12, therefore she was assumed to have bad luck of a widow and was treated extremely terrible, even sometimes her adopted family will torture her.

However, her adopted grandmother Chen Ta Sao protected and loved her like her own granddaughter. She was the first female follower in Northern Taiwan and assisted Mackay set up the first church in Wugu district. She also taught local kids to learn and write, one of them is Tiu Chhang Min. Macky found out that females had been the secondary citizen and did not receive equal rights, which made females unable to hear gospel. Because of this, Mackay and Tiu Chhang Min became lovers through Chen Ta Sao. On February 1878, Tiu Chhang Min was baptized by Mackay, and married on May 27.

Tiu Chhang Min was a rather “modern” female, maybe because of her foreign husband, or maybe is her incredible brilliance, her thinking and knowledge was more advanced compared to others. Not only this, she also offered help to Mackay’s female works and taught in Mackay’s schools.
